Painting Pro Times, the source for paint professionals!
Paint and coating technology is entering an advanced era that was considered science fiction 20-30 years ago. We watch spy movies where some evil doer has a super secret lab making an end-all chemical or doomsday weapons. James Bond, Mission Impossible and Austin Powers fall between fantasy and farce thrillers. This issue features a News link about a company with a name worthy of the big screen. Darkside Scientific, a real business with a not so ordinary name, announced the release of a coating system that emits light.

Color Selection: Cruise Control
Color plays a powerful role when designing a small city at sea. When passengers first board Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas, eager to start their vacation, they notice the vibrant colors of its festive spaces and the subtle hues of its tranquil spaces. But the most important color might be the one most passengers don’t notice at all: the one that dominates the stairs that take them to and from their stateroom for the duration of their cruise.

Don’t Get Shortchanged on Change Orders
While some change orders have a minimal effect on an original contract’s scope or value (or both), they cannot be overlooked. Cumulatively, or even individually, change orders have significant impacts on sequencing, budgets and resources. Because of this, work associated with change orders tends to be riskier than the original contract scope—especially pending or unsettled change orders—because the contractor is often required to proceed without formal approval from the owner or prime contractor.

A Good Tool for Scheduling Painting or Remodeling Projects
Managing the scheduling of painting or remodeling projects can be a real juggling act. When I was active in my family’s painting business, the schedule seemed to adjust and change daily. Sometimes, the headaches happened when a crew called last minute and said they were not finished on a Friday and needed 2 more hours on Monday morning to finish up, and they did not call their next project to let them know they would not be there Monday morning. Without the right technology, a home improvement schedule can be one of the most painful parts of running a business. READ NOW
The Aging Housing Stock
The American housing stock continues to age, especially as residential construction continues its modest rebound after the Great Recession. According to the latest 2013 American Housing Survey (AHS), published by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the median age of owner-occupied homes is 37 years old, compared to only 27 years old in 1993. This aging trend signals a growing market for remodelers, as older structures normally require additional remodeling and renovations. It also implies additional demand for more new construction over the long run. READ NOW
How to Coordinate with Color for Spring
For me spring and summer bring with them a blossoming sense of lightness and renewal. Floating and even a little aloof, my mind starts to drift in and out of dreams wandering wherever it pleases. These are the seasons of untamable imagination and creativity. I find myself detached from the rush of day to day life, seeking more time to drift about the yard, enjoying the slower pace. I seek colors that reflect this whimsical and etherial attitude for inside my home as well. The color experts at Pantone have designed the perfect solution to my summer whims. READ NOW

Fence Staining
Before you know it we will be feeling fall temperatures and, hopefully, getting some rain. Don't neglect your fences! If your fence is in need of staining, painting or sealing, you should have the work done before the colder damp weather arrives. Protection of your fence will not only make it look nice but also help it last longer. If your fence is shared, it's best if you can get your neighbor to agree to treat their side of the fence as well. READ NOW
