Whether we are in boom, bust or somewhere between, there is an industry wide shortage of craftsmen. The challenge is persistent and many have attributed it to Millennial demographics. The slacker generation does not seem interested with working in the trades. Maybe the free basement lodging aided and abetted the lack of entry into the paint and coating application? All the same, we are sorely in need of the young and work ethic inclined. Of course the professional painting market is not alone; the entire construction zone is struggling to find help. But the wound goes deeper…more severe.

The Modern American Craftsman
The Modern American Craftsman has made the endangered species list. Well, if there were such a trade registry. The key issue revolves around the word craftsman, and has absolutely nothing to do with the whack jobs waving politically correct wands declaring that the term “craftsmanship” breaks down to “crafts person, crafts woman, crafts man, crafts worker and crafts whatever” (latest self described definitions of gender). Actually, some of those terms bring to mind colored paper, scissors, markers and glue; far from an expert with specialized paint and coating application knowledge and technical skills.
Homeowner Survey from Sherwin-Williams
The Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week survey reveals homeowner perspectives on painting projects, including plans, sentiment and influences on color selection and how the results differ if the homeowner has worked with a contractor. According to the 2016 Dodge Data & Analytics Outlook report, the U.S. construction industry is predicted to grow 6 percent this year, with the value of construction reaching an estimated $712 billion. With the growth trend expected to continue on an upward trajectory into 2017 and beyond, construction companies are sure to look for ways to increase operational efficiencies and improve worker safety-especially when the heat is on.
